Silver Bells

Silver Bells is a popular Christmas carol. It was composed by Ray Evans (as the lyrics writer) and Jay Livingston (as the melody composer). Silver Bells was first used in the motion picture movie “the Lemon Drop Kid” starring Marilyn Maxwell and Bob Hope. Bing Crosby and Carol Richards first recorded Silver Bells which was later released in October 1950 by Decca Records. Since then, the song has become more popular.

Interesting fact: Did you know that Silver Bells was originally titled as “Tinkle Bell” for Evans was motivated by a tiny bell that they has on their desk.

Silver Bells Lyrics

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style.
In the air
There's a feeling
of Christmas.

Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on ev'ry street corner you'll hear,

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city.
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing.
Soon it will be Christmas day.

Strings of street lights
Even stop lights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush
Home with their treasures.

Hear the snow crunch.
See the kids bunch.
This is Santa's big scene.
And above all this bustle
You'll hear,

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day.

Merry Christmas!

Silent Night

Written as a poem in 1816 by a young priest named Joseph Mohr, Silent Night is actually an Austrian hymn titled "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht.” It was only two years later when Mohr showed the poem to his friend and requested him to compose a melody as the lyric accompaniment so that the carol could be used as church piece at Midnight Mass. "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!" was heard for the first instant in St. Nicholas Church that very evening of December 24, 1818.

Several years later, the song managed to spread like wildfire around the globe and in the process, several musical notes were changed, and the carol evolved into the melody we know today.

Silent Night Lyrics

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavely hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Christ the Saviour, is born!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Project Work (poem writing) - Творческие задания

At the English lessons my students often do project work.One of the tasks given was poem writing.
Read the poem written by a student of Form 10 A Elina Potapova
Do you like the poem? Do you agree with her?

Lyrics
(by Elina Potapova)
Somewhere far away,
There is a certain country -
An ideal world where there is no pain and tears,
And it is called
The Earth of Dreams.
In this country all people laugh and sing,
Here lovely flowers grow;
In the depths of a dense forest
Wonders meet...
There is no snow and rain,
No cold and cloudy days;
There is no place for suffering
And empty expectations;
But I wouldn't like to live there.
Our lives are not to given for that;
And in fact, it cannot be named LIFE.
We live to feel,
To find and lose,
To suffer,
Sometimes in the clouds to soar,
To hope and expect...
Without that we don't live
But just exist...

               Ivan Bobov
Please, come quicker, May
I don't want to go to school every day.
I'm tired of these lessons,
                       I want to be free.
I think all pupils with me
                                   will agree.
But I like my school,
We have a good swimming pool,
All teachers are cool,
But I don't like one rule -
To do homework - it's bad.
When I'm doing it - I'm sad.
To our school I like to go.
I wrote this poem two minutes ago.
